This opportunity is officially granted by a ministerial decision signed Thursday (4/7/24) by the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, Deputy Minister of Health, Irini Agapidakis and Deputy Minister of Health, Mario Themistocleous.
This decision, which gives qualified as well as qualified doctors the right to work in the private sector, seeks to play the role of a “bank” in the large wave of doctors fleeing public health, according to the Ministry of Health. system, mainly for financial reasons.

Conditions for the implementation of private work and employment agencies
Doctors and dentists of the National Health System (ESH) branch remain full-time and exclusive employees. Exceptionally, in general hospitals – Health Centers and Health Centers of ESY, as well as GN “PAPAGEORGIOU” Thessaloniki, may carry out personal work outside of their normal working hours and on call, provided that they undertake insurance and tax obligations for a certain period of work.
In particular, they may maintain a private practice, provide medical services in connection with any relationship, including with a consultant or expert/technical advisor, and education/training/supervision of health professionals, organization of lectures and scientific events, and writing of scientific papers. articles, medical health updates for a private clinic or private diagnostic or therapeutic laboratory or pharmaceutical companies or medical technology product companies and generally any private companies providing or covering health services, if they are duly authorized. license as per existing procedure.
The above medical services cannot be provided in relation to paid work.

The procedure for issuing and canceling a license
Applications for a private project license are submitted to the Governor or the President of the Hospital or the Governor of the Ministry of Health during the second fortnight of December and May, respectively. , to the first half of the next year and the second semester.
The positive or negative decision of the governor must be sufficiently justified. The decision specifies the duration of the private project, its start and end, as well as the headquarters or employment agency.
The personal project license is granted under the following conditions conditions:
- Failure to perform clinical work on patients examined by the same doctor in the regular clinics of the hospital or in the Health Center, or on patients on a single operation list.

What if an NHS doctor moves to another hospital?
If the doctor is transferred to another hospital of the same or another Health Region or to the Primary Care Station of another Health Region, the existing license of paragraph 1 of Article 2 automatically loses its validity.
As an exception and only in this case, the doctor may submit a new application for a license to the hospital or the Health District to which he moved, without complying with the period specified in paragraph 1 of Article 2 of this Law.
Penalties for non-compliance
